Anthropic reported a Bonita Springs, Florida, woman to authorities after she threatened in a chat with Claude to “shoot up” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, leading to her arrest on a felony charge of making a written threat of violence, according to Damien Alvarado at WINK News. Carli Michelle Heller made the threat on September 26 and claimed a day later that she had gotten a new gun, the arrest report says. Anthropic’s safety systems flagged the messages as serious enough for human review, and its reviewers then alerted law enforcement under a published company policy that allows sharing user data with police when someone could be killed or badly hurt. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said users are “never truly anonymous.”
