Wikipedia has updated its editorial policy to explicitly prohibit the use of large language models to generate or rewrite article content, tightening previous language that only banned using LLMs to create articles entirely from scratch. The policy change, put to a vote by the site's volunteer editor community, passed 40 to 2, though it stops short of a full AI ban, still permitting editors to use LLMs to suggest basic copyedits to their own writing as long as the AI does not introduce new content and a human reviews all changes. The policy notes that “caution is required” because LLMs can alter the meaning of text in ways that are no longer supported by cited sources.
