USPS has started delivering some Amazon packages the same day they arrive, under a pilot in which Amazon drops a second batch at postal facilities around midday on top of its usual morning drop-off, according to Max Garland at Supply Chain Dive. Packages that come in between noon and 1 p.m. get sorted by clerks and go out with city carriers by 8 p.m., starting with 200 packages a day each in Morgantown, West Virginia, and Lake Havasu City, Arizona, then 500 a day in Columbia, South Carolina, from October 20, per a letter carriers’ union memo. Amazon said the extra drop means shoppers who order later in the day can still get same-day delivery. The pilot comes months after the two agreed to a scaled-back contract in April that cut Amazon’s minimum package volume with USPS.
