Democratic lawmakers and US industry groups are pressing the Trump administration to restart trade talks with Canada after Ottawa announced counter-tariffs on a wide range of American goods, according to Anita Balakrishnan at The Logic. Rep. Tim Kennedy of New York said Trump started an economic war and that Canadian visits to his state are down 26% and Canadian spending down 28%. Trade groups for automakers, sporting goods, home appliances, and farm equipment all urged the two countries back into negotiations, and MichAuto’s Glenn Stevens Jr. said costs around Detroit have already risen under existing tariffs. The White House, however, blamed Canada’s trade policies for the damage to US firms. Oxford Economics expects the escalation to cut 0.1 percentage points from US GDP growth in 2027.
