The UK unveiled plans to force digital platforms like YouTube and TikTok to give established broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 greater algorithmic prominence, with ministers warning that online misinformation risks becoming “existential for our democracy.” A government consultation would require platforms to promote content from “trustworthy providers,” a label that could extend to national and local newspapers, with special rules considered for periods of social unrest or crisis. Media minister Ian Murray said he hopes tech companies cooperate but signaled legislation could follow, while YouTube pushed back that prominence rules distort viewer choice by forcing it to prioritize government-picked channels. The green paper also proposes shielding major sporting events like the World Cup and Olympics from paywalls and floats switching off terrestrial TV signals as early as 2034.
