U.K. FCA finalizes strict transparency & affordability rules for BNPL

The U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority finalized new regulations for BNPL lenders to enforce stricter transparency and affordability checks. Under the new “Consumer Duty,” providers are required to perform proportionate credit assessments and offer clear repayment terms to the 11 million users in the market. Lenders are preparing to register for temporary permissions starting in May 2026 as experts predict market consolidation due to rising compliance costs.
