TikTok is scaling back its AI-powered video summaries feature after the technology produced wildly inaccurate captions during a limited rollout, according to Business Insider. The feature is being limited to identifying products in videos rather than fully describing video contents, after hallucinations included describing a video of celebrity Charli D'Amelio talking to the camera as a “collection of various blueberries with different toppings” and labeling a dog-training video as “a captivating display of intricate origami art, meticulously folded from a single sheet.” The pullback follows broader concerns about misinformation on TikTok and reflects the ongoing challenges social media platforms face in deploying AI-generated content responsibly. TikTok has not specified when or if it plans to relaunch the full video summarization feature.
