Temu wins EU approval for its plan to curb illegal products, five months after its €200 million Digital Services Act fine

The European Commission approved Temu’s proposal for fixing the Digital Services Act violations behind the €200 million fine it imposed in May, when regulators found Temu had underestimated how often EU shoppers ran into illegal products such as chargers that failed safety tests and baby toys with banned chemicals. Under the plan, Temu has to base its risk assessments on current data specific to its own marketplace, check whether its recommendation algorithm helps illegal listings reach shoppers, and show with hard numbers that its safeguards actually cut down on them. Temu must file an interim risk assessment within four months proving the changes are in place, and if the Commission decides it’s falling short, it can order daily penalty payments on top of the fine.
