TikTok abandoned its appeal and will pay a £12.7 million fine from the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office, three years after the regulator found the app let as many as 1.75 million British children under 13 sign up in 2020 without parental consent. TikTok said it still disagrees with the ruling but chose to pay because the fine covers 2018 through 2020, before it added many of its current youth safety policies. TikTok also dropped a second appeal against an ICO demand for details on how its recommendation system uses data from 13- to 17-year-olds, which lets the regulator restart that investigation.
