Shopify will roll out USDC stablecoin payments to its entire platform later this year, marking its largest crypto move yet. Initially launching in late June with select U.S. merchants, the rollout will expand to Europe and all users. Shopify partnered with Coinbase and Stripe to build a payments protocol on Coinbase’s Base blockchain that supports chargebacks, refunds, and retail payment needs. Unlike past third-party crypto integrations, this stablecoin feature will be opt-out by default. The move reflects broader Big Tech interest in stablecoins for faster and cheaper cross-border payments, with firms like Meta, Apple, and Airbnb also exploring the space. Shopify will offer merchants up to 0.5% cash back for accepting USDC.
