Shopify launches Shopify Protect, which blocks likely fraud before it reaches banks and will cover chargebacks beyond Shop Pay

by | Oct 30, 2026 | Latest E-commerce News & Updates

Shopify launched Shopify Protect, a set of fraud and dispute tools that runs automatically and at no extra cost for every merchant on Shopify Payments. The biggest change is that Shopify now declines payments it’s nearly sure are fraudulent before sending them to the bank for authorization, so the merchant never ends up with an order to cancel or refund. Orders that do get through now show merchants, in plain language, why Shopify considers them risky, and when a customer files a dispute, Shopify’s AI gathers the evidence card networks look for, including delivery photos from the carrier. Shopify already absorbs fraud chargebacks on eligible Shop Pay orders and plans to extend that coverage beyond Shop Pay.
