Shake Shack denied that it charges more when customers decline to tip, after a TikTok posted August 8 pulled in millions of views. User B.D. Powell filmed himself and his wife buying three shakes at a self-serve kiosk inside the Salt Lake City airport location, and once they skipped the tip the screen flagged a pricing update that added 50 cents to every item in their cart. Shake Shack said the airport Shack belongs to its licensee HMSHost, which investigated and blamed an error in its own kiosk technology unrelated to tipping, then told the chain the problem was fixed. NBC News consumer investigative correspondent Vicky Nguyen ran the same test at a Shake Shack in 30 Rock on August 13, and declining the tip produced no price change.
