Pentagon inks AI procurement deals with AWS, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, SpaceX and Reflection AI, but not Anthropic

The U.S. Defense Department announced AI procurement contracts with seven tech firms including Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, SpaceX, and the startup Reflection AI, which raised $2B in funding last year. The contracts cover AI products that will be used in Impact Level 6 and Impact Level 7 environments for storing classified information and made available through the Pentagon's internal GenAI.mil portal, which has been adopted by more than 1.3M Defense Department personnel since launching last year, per GeekWire. Notably absent from the contract list is Anthropic, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated as a supply chain risk in March after the company declined to let the Pentagon use Claude for “all lawful” purposes, though Axios has reported the Defense Department is using Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview model despite the ban.
