OpenAI will turn on ChatGPT advertising in Brazil and Mexico within the week, adding to the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Only users on the Free and Go tiers see ads, and advertisers have been able to aim them at specific regions inside a country since July. OpenAI is also lining up an ad format built on its own models, with an advertising policy document updated July 31 defining sponsored agents as conversations users hold with an AI representative of an advertiser’s business, though the company wouldn’t discuss it. Ads were running at $100 million in annual recurring revenue when OpenAI last disclosed the figure in May, against $294 billion at Google and $196 billion at Meta last year.
