OpenAI’s ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry said ChatGPT now handles roughly 20% as many search-like queries as Google, according to Big Technology, which covered his remarks at an OpenAI dinner in New York. Fry said OpenAI counts a search each time a question sends ChatGPT out to the web, but he didn’t say which Google figure, time period, or regions he was comparing against. He also said ChatGPT’s weekly user base went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in about two months. Google hasn’t responded to the comparison, but Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in the company’s third-quarter results that Google’s query growth is the fastest it has been in five years.
