OpenAI routes Dots tasks to its cheaper Terra model as Elon Musk says Grok Bot costs too much to run relative to its revenue

OpenAI is adding a router that sends some Dots tasks to its smaller GPT-6.1 Terra model instead of GPT-6 Astra, cutting how much compute the assistants use, according to Fortune. Each Dot runs on its own cloud computer, and ChatGPT consumer head Adam Fry told reporters Dots are compute heavy and that offering them beyond the $100-per-month Pro plan depends on efficiency gains he expects will bring costs down quickly. Elon Musk said this week that Grok Bot, the personal agent SpaceX launched in August, costs too much to run relative to the revenue it brings in. Musk also suggested SpaceX is cutting the compute behind Grok Bot, which means users are hitting their usage limits sooner.
