OpenAI plans to start calling its data centers “AI compute campuses” as part of a lobbying and PR campaign it will roll out after the US midterm elections, according to Axios. The campaign will include a bill that would let local residents weigh in on data center projects, along with new commitments to host communities, but OpenAI has shared few details on either one. OpenAI also wants to push for AI “speed limits” and for the US to help set global AI standards. Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane said AI will be the central issue of the 2028 election, and he called the midterms “a bit of a movie trailer” for that race. Lehane also said communities should hold companies accountable for the data centers they build.
