OpenAI renames ChatGPT’s Sponsored ad label to a more prominent Ad tag as it adds directions and local-intent ads to results

by | Jul 2, 2026 | Latest E-commerce News & Updates

OpenAI dropped the Sponsored label on its ChatGPT ads in favor of a more prominent Ad tag on placements that appear at the bottom of a response, a change spotted by Brodie Clark at SERP Alerts. These ads can tie to earlier queries within a session rather than the specific output they sit beneath, which Clark noted can feel unrelated to what is on screen. OpenAI is also pulling more local intent into conversations, surfacing weather, lodging, mileage, directions, and related ads when users ask about travel plans. Even so, OpenAI still cannot match Google’s real-time navigation, offering turn-by-turn instructions but no live traffic, construction, or routing data of its own.
