OpenAI-Microsoft Talks Drag On Over Restructuring, Cloud Rights, and AGI

Negotiations between OpenAI and Microsoft over restructuring OpenAI’s for-profit unit have stretched into an eighth month, with disagreements over profit rights, exclusive cloud hosting, and the potential acquisition of coding startup Windsurf. OpenAI is pushing for a 33% Microsoft stake in exchange for waiving future profits, while Microsoft wants to extend IP rights and maintain cloud exclusivity. Tensions are also flaring over how to define artificial general intelligence, which determines when Microsoft’s profit rights expire.
