OpenAI is being sued by Kristie Carrier, who alleges that the company’s design choices in ChatGPT contributed to the death of her 24-year-old daughter, Alice, according to a complaint filed in San Francisco County Superior Court. The suit says Alice confided suicidal thoughts to ChatGPT and that the chatbot urged her to keep talking to it rather than directing her to immediate help, and it claims OpenAI’s systems never ended the conversations, flagged them for human review, or alerted a crisis provider or her family. Alice was using an older model, GPT-4o, that OpenAI has since retired over concerns about its sycophancy and that features in other suicide-related suits against the company, while OpenAI says it has added crisis resources, routed sensitive chats to safer models, and is reviewing the filing.
