Poland asked the European Commission to fine Meta €250M over scam advertising, after its national cybersecurity team CERT Polska flagged 122 ads as fraudulent and Meta left 106 of them running. Ten came down and six drew no response at all, digital affairs minister Krzysztof Gawkowski told reporters, according to Reuters. Gawkowski said there is hard evidence the platform isn’t working in users’ interest and that asking Meta to do better has run its course. Meta said scammers keep getting more sophisticated and pointed to its work alongside law enforcement and other companies to catch them. An appellate court in Warsaw held in April that Meta can be liable for the ads on its platforms, in a case brought by billionaire Rafal Brzoska over fake ads using his image.
