OpenAI is in talks to give a Jeffrey Katzenberg and Bill Peebles startup access to its shelved Sora video model for filmmakers

OpenAI is in talks to let a startup co-founded by Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg and former Sora research lead Bill Peebles access and modify its shelved Sora video model and sell software built on it to filmmakers, according to The Information. OpenAI shut down Sora and its TikTok-style app earlier this year because the model cost too much to build and run, and it moved those resources to ChatGPT and its language models. If the deal goes through, OpenAI would get equity in the unnamed startup, which former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa also co-founded, and the startup would get enough access to heavily customize Sora, but it’s unclear whether that includes the model’s weights.
