OpenAI is expanding into high-ticket consulting, offering AI customization services starting at $10 million to large companies and government agencies. Through a team of “forward deployed engineers,” many formerly from Palantir, OpenAI helps clients fine-tune GPT-4o using proprietary data and build tailored applications. The strategy challenges incumbents like Palantir and Accenture, with contracts already secured from the Pentagon and Grab. While less profitable than software sales, the approach supports OpenAI’s push for billion-dollar enterprise deals and deeper adoption of its models beyond self-serve APIs.
