Nearly 200 economists, researchers, and tech leaders signed a statement titled “We Must Act Now,” warning that AI could transform the economy faster than any prior technology and urging policymakers to prepare, according to The New York Times. Signatories include 15 Nobel laureates, the chief economists of OpenAI and Anthropic, Anthropic cofounder Jack Clark, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, along with past AI skeptics like MIT’s Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson. Organizers led by Stanford economist Erik Brynjolfsson warn the disruption could exceed the Industrial Revolution over a far shorter span, though the statement offers no specific policy recommendations.
