Meta runs full-page newspaper ads pressing TikTok and YouTube to adopt the teen safety limits it agreed to in its settlement

Meta began running full-page ads Thursday and Friday in the national editions of The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Post, calling on TikTok and YouTube to adopt the teen safety measures it agreed to this week, with the campaign set to continue through the weekend, according to Bloomberg. Meta has a direct financial stake in whether they go along, because its settlement with the states, worth as much as $18B, withholds more than $5B unless YouTube and TikTok each pay about $5B and impose comparable restrictions. The ads argue Meta can’t set an industry standard by itself and that the protections work only if its rivals adopt them too. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the states want a broad solution that covers Snap as well.
