The idea, pushed by Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis and backed by several senior officials, is an independent body modeled on FINRA that would vet advanced models and test them for risks before wide deployment. Zuckerberg wrote in an August essay that slowing a release by even a month puts US leadership against China at risk. His call didn’t kill the proposal, which remains under consideration alongside a lighter voluntary standards body along the lines of the Motion Picture Association, an approach David Sacks has pushed.
