Mercari brings authentication to US and Taiwan buyers on its Global App, making Japan-based inspection mandatory above $300

Mercari started rolling out authentication on October 21 to US and Taiwanese shoppers who use its Global App to buy sneakers, trading cards, and luxury goods from sellers in Japan, according to Liz Morton at Value Added Resource. The check is free and required on eligible orders of $300 and up, and anyone buying a cheaper item can add it for $11.90 per trading card, $12.90 for sneakers, or $29.90 for fashion and luxury goods. Each item gets a physical inspection at a facility in Japan, which makes delivery take three to five business days longer. But Mercari’s policy says a pass doesn’t guarantee an item is authentic, so a buyer who later suspects a fake still has to file a counterfeit claim within 14 days of delivery.
