A young couple in Indonesia's Aceh province were publicly caned 21 times each after a Sharia court convicted them of violating Islamic law by kissing during a TikTok livestream, according to the Associated Press. The 22-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were arrested in April after a February 27 stream of them kissing in a car went viral and prompted complaints to religious authorities, who seized and ordered the destruction of the phone and USB drive holding the video. Aceh is the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia that enforces Islamic law, permitting up to 100 lashes for offenses like adultery and gay sex, and four other people were caned the same day for online gambling and adultery. Amnesty International Indonesia condemned the punishment as cruel and degrading, noting Indonesia has ratified a convention against inhumane punishment.
