Google opened preorders for the Googlebook at $899, the AI laptop it first showed in May, and US shipments start October 4. The machines run Android with a desktop build of Chrome, sit above Chromebooks in Google’s lineup, and have Gemini built in rather than reached through a browser or an installed app. Magic Cursor, the pointer, aims Gemini at whatever is on screen, Rambler, a dictation tool, tidies up rambling speech, and widgets enable a user to vibe-code on command. Google is bundling 12 months of its AI Pro subscription with each laptop purchase and promising updates for as long as 10 years. Schools run roughly 50 million Chromebooks by Google’s count, and that installed base is what the company eventually wants running Gemini.
