Google launched selfie video as a sign-in option for Google Accounts, aimed at users who get locked out or lose access to their usual phone or computer. Setup involves looking into the device camera and following short guided head movements that capture the face from several angles, and later sign-in attempts get matched against that stored recording. Google says the video is encrypted at rest, stored only with user consent, deletable at any time from account settings, and used only for sign-in unless the user opts to share it for other purposes. Liveness checks requiring simple movements are meant to block impersonation attempts using photos and deepfake video. Selfie video joins passkeys and recovery contacts among Google's account recovery options, and users can check eligibility now.
