Google begins testing branded prescription drug ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews in the US, with pharma certification required

Google started running a test of branded prescription drug ads inside AI Overviews and AI Mode in the US this month, according to Trishla Ostwal at Adweek, with text and Shopping ads placed in sections marked “Sponsored.” Google began a small healthcare ad test in AI Mode in June, but it barred ads that carry text disclaimers, which kept out drug ads that are required to list risks and side effects, and the new phase allows those disclaimers in some campaign types. Advertisers need Google’s pharmaceutical certification to take part, the ads are restricted to standard formats that Google’s AI won’t rewrite, and negative keyword lists still apply, letting drug brands keep ads off searches they’ve excluded.
