Gen Z trusts ChatGPT over Google for product research, but most US shoppers won’t let an AI assistant spend without approval

by | Oct 4, 2026 | Latest E-commerce News & Updates

ChatGPT is the product research source Gen Z trusts most, chosen by 31% of Gen Z respondents versus 12% for Google Search, according to a survey of 2,000 US adults that Talker Research ran for payments company Spreedly. Across all ages, Google still leads at 25%, with friends and family next at 22%. Shoppers are also open to letting AI choose for them, as 63% would at least consider letting an assistant pick brands if it reliably saved them 20%. Far fewer would let it pay, with only 20% willing to let an AI assistant spend without asking first and just 19% willing to hand over their payment details even for a guaranteed lowest price.
