eBay puts Depop banners on its homepage and atop fashion search, sending buyers off the site sellers pay to advertise on

eBay has put a Depop banner above the fold on its homepage and another over fashion searches, and clicking either one carries the shopper to the same query on Depop.com, according to Liz Morton at Value Added Resource. That slot above search is one eBay rents to its own sellers as a cost-per-click ad under Promoted Stores, while eBay policy forbids sellers from steering buyers to outside sites to finish a sale. eBay has run this play twice already, competing against sellers through a TCGPlayer-branded account after buying that company in 2022, then dropping unlabeled Find It On Goldin modules into search results that take buyers to Goldin.com. Depop sits far closer to the core business, competing in used clothing, where eBay turns over more than $10B a year.
