Binance loses $6.3B in what appears to be the largest crypto hack ever, as tracing firms point to North Korea’s TraderTraitor

Hackers drained about $6.3B in crypto from Binance’s hot wallets on October 29, most of it in roughly 20 minutes, making it the biggest crypto theft yet recorded, according to Matt Burgess at Wired. Binance froze all deposits and withdrawals, said it will cover every loss, and said the attack started with an engineer’s compromised laptop before its investigation turned up more entry points. Chainalysis and TRM Labs linked the theft to TraderTraitor, the North Korean group the FBI blamed for last year’s $1.5B Bybit hack, after the stolen funds turned up mixed with money from last month’s Bitget exploit. Exchanges and issuers have frozen about $2.8B, nearly all of it stablecoins, but the remaining $3.3B is largely Bitcoin, Ether and XRP, coins that can’t be frozen until they hit an exchange.
