Apple and Google promoted nudify deepfake apps that violate their own store policies, a Tech Transparency Project report found

by | Apr 19, 2026 | E-commerce News

The Tech Transparency Project found that Apple and Google not only failed to remove over 100 apps designed to generate nonconsensual nude images of people from photos, but actively promoted them through search results and ad carousels, despite both platforms having explicit policies against sexually explicit content. The apps have been downloaded 483 million times and generated more than $122M in lifetime revenue, which TTP suggests may explain why enforcement has been inconsistent given that Apple and Google collect a share of app revenue. Following the report, Apple said it removed 15 flagged apps and contacted six others, while Google said many referenced apps have been suspended, though TTP's investigation found numerous prohibited apps and search terms still accessible on both platforms.
