Apple and Google lobbyists pitched lawmakers in Arizona, Georgia, and Kansas on age-verification bills that would stop individuals from suing and let only state attorneys general enforce the rules, according to Owen Dahlkamp at Politico. The drafts were meant to replace the App Store Accountability Act, under which app stores verify ages, get parental consent before minors download apps, and carry the legal liability, a version Meta is lobbying for. The Apple and Google bills mostly let users state their own age, which child safety advocates say kids can easily lie about. Apple said some proposals would force anyone downloading an app to hand over sensitive data, while Google accused other platforms of pushing responsibility onto app stores.
