Anthropic retracts mass GitHub takedown after accidentally leaking Claude Code source code

by | Apr 2, 2026 | E-commerce News

Anthropic accidentally included the source code for its Claude Code command line application in a recent release, and in trying to remove copies from GitHub, issued a DMCA takedown notice that swept up roughly 8,100 repositories, including legitimate forks of Anthropic's own public Claude Code repo. The company's head of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, said the broad takedown was unintentional, and Anthropic retracted the notices for all but one repository and 96 forks that contained the accidentally released code. The incident adds to scrutiny of Anthropic's operational execution as the company reportedly plans an IPO, a process where leaking proprietary source code and mishandling the cleanup carries reputational and compliance risk, according to TechCrunch.
