Anthropic has opened talks with New York City Comptroller Mark Levine, who sent CEO Dario Amodei a letter on Wednesday urging the company to hold off on its IPO, expected as soon as next month, until it fully deals with the safety and governance risks of AI that it has warned about itself. Levine, who oversees city pension funds holding more than $325B, told Bloomberg Television he couldn’t describe the discussions. He argued that a major safety incident after the listing would hurt the stock, and that the city’s index funds will likely be pulled into Anthropic’s shares once it’s public. His letter also called the voluntary safety accord the Trump administration signed with AI companies last month insufficient.
