Amazon rebuilds its Alexa Home Map in 3D, using Ring cameras to animate people and cars outside the home, with a preview this year

Amazon rebuilt its Alexa Home Map as an interactive 3D model that covers the outside of a property as well as the inside, replacing the flat 2D version it first put in the Alexa app three years ago. Users generate the exterior by entering their address, then scan each room with a compatible iPhone and drop their Echo speakers, Fire TVs, cameras, lights, locks, and thermostats into place. From the map they can change a speaker’s volume or check a camera, see each light glow in its current color, and watch Ring cameras animate people and cars coming up to the house, with a timeline for scrubbing back through a full day of footage from all cameras together. Amazon will start a preview later this year, and some features will require Alexa+ or a Ring subscription.
