Amazon laid off up to 250 people in its devices and services unit, mostly software developers, according to Reuters. The cuts came on the same day Amazon announced an Alexa alarm clock and photo frame, and after weeks of launches in the unit that included new Kindles and tablets. Amazon confirmed the layoffs, and a spokesperson said they’d help the company run more efficiently and line up with its product plans. The devices cuts follow roughly 1,000 job eliminations in Amazon’s core retail division earlier this month.
