Amazon has expanded its Counterfeit Crimes Unit to India, staffing a three-person New Delhi office this year to work with the Central Bureau of Investigation, Indian Customs and brands on civil suits and criminal cases against counterfeiters, according to Palak Agarwal at Business Today. Kebharu Smith, the unit’s global director and a former Justice Department prosecutor, said Amazon wants to go after people producing fakes inside India because the country has become a major manufacturing and export base, and that the team will also cover small local brands in cities beyond Delhi and Mumbai. Amazon says the unit has taken civil or criminal action against more than 32,000 alleged counterfeiters worldwide since it launched in 2020, and over 290 of them have been arrested and jailed.
