Amazon agrees to refund $3M to Arizonans to settle Attorney General Kris Mayes’ lawsuit claiming it made Prime too hard to cancel

Amazon agreed to pay $3 million in refunds to Arizonans who tried to cancel Prime, settling a 2024 lawsuit by Attorney General Kris Mayes over obstacles she said Amazon built into canceling. Under the consent judgment, Amazon will also put $1.5 million into the AG’s consumer fraud fund, cover $1.5 million in state legal fees, and give $1 million to food charities Mayes chooses, while denying it broke any Arizona law. Mayes’s suit said that until 2023 Amazon required at least six clicks to cancel online while advertising that members could cancel anytime, and that the process cut cancellations by 14% at one point. Amazon already revised its cancellation flow last year under a $2.5 billion FTC settlement, but Mayes’s office said that deal may not reach every affected Arizonan.
