OpenAI signed Magnite and PubMatic as partners to sell ChatGPT ad space that would otherwise go unsold, according to The Information. Advertisers can set budgets, place bids, and upload ads through either company’s platform, but OpenAI still controls placement and how the ads look, and volumes are small to start. Magnite and PubMatic join Criteo, which became ChatGPT’s first ad tech partner in March, and Amazon DSP, which opened a buying route in September, while OpenAI also sells ads directly through the self-serve Ads Manager it launched in May. OpenAI said ChatGPT ads hit a $1B annualized revenue run rate at the end of August, and over 100,000 businesses had advertised on ChatGPT by October 21.
