OpenAI’s fast-growing ad business draws complaints from advertisers over weak results, limited targeting, and buggy tools

OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT ads to more than 50 countries in seven months, but some advertisers say the results have been disappointing and the tools are buggy, according to Suzanne Vranica at the Wall Street Journal. Rocket CMO Jonathan Mildenhall called the ads “underwhelming,” and Rocket and Taskrabbit want better targeting before spending more. OpenAI first charged some large brands about $60 for every 1,000 views regardless of clicks, and it showed so few ads that some brands couldn’t spend their budgets and paused. OpenAI has since moved to auction pricing, and ads executive Dave Dugan said the early limits came from a focus on user trust. Growth has also lagged some analysts’ hopes, and NewStreet Research cut its forecast after OpenAI said ads were on pace for $1 billion a year.
