uBlock Origin stops maintaining its Facebook ad filters, so ads will return each time Meta engineers around one of them

uBlock Origin will stop maintaining the filters that keep ads out of Facebook, a member of the volunteer development team wrote on the project’s subreddit. The filters already written stay in place and still work, but nobody on the team will repair them once Meta engineers around them, and some users have reported ads returning already. The developer called Facebook a “disgusting anti-user site,” saying its staff watch open-source projects in order to counter them. Others in the thread described the tactics, among them splitting the word “Sponsored” into individual letters, each buried in its own bit of markup, then randomizing that order and padding it with fake characters so pattern matching fails. Anyone who still wants to fight it can submit filter fixes as pull requests.
