Walmart launches Agent Gateway so AI agents can shop for customers, while Amazon keeps blocking agents from buying on its site

Walmart launched Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search its inventory and place orders for shoppers at Walmart and Sam’s Club without handing the agent their personal details or order history. CEO John Furner unveiled it Wednesday in San Francisco. Starting next month, Agent Profiles will give each agent its own profile in a customer’s account that keeps its orders separate, and every purchase either needs approval or stays under a spending cap the customer sets. Walmart’s terms bar agents from going beyond what the shopper asked or touching payment details, and its returns policy still applies when an agent gets an order wrong. Amazon took the opposite approach in September when it began blocking AI agents, including Walmart partner Meta’s Muse.
