Creators on TikTok and Instagram have made New York City the default set for short-form street shows like “Recess Therapy” and “Shop Cats,” according to Sapna Maheshwari and John Koblin at The New York Times. The biggest shows now book celebrities plugging new projects, Mayor Zohran Mamdani uses them to promote city programs, and Mad Realities, the studio behind “Keep the Meter Running,” signed with Fox’s creator studio to develop a slate. “SubwayTakes” host Kareem Rahma has mocked the glut of man-on-the-street formats as interchangeable, but Fallen Media alone says it’s testing nine more. New York generally lets creators shoot in public with handheld gear and no permit, while Los Angeles usually requires one, so some LA policymakers now want to loosen those rules.
