Shopify launches Canvas, a visual workspace where merchants design their whole store with Sidekick, which now edits theme code

by | Oct 3, 2026 | Latest E-commerce News & Updates

Shopify began rolling out Canvas, a design workspace that lays every page of a merchant’s store side by side so they can pan across the whole site and zoom into details while they build it with Sidekick, the AI agent built into Shopify. Merchants can still click an element to change it, or ask Sidekick in chat, and its edits show up immediately on a working render of the store’s real code that merchants can check across products, collections, and phone or desktop screens. Behind it, Sidekick now works directly in a theme’s files and checks both its code and screenshots of the result before handing changes back, which lets it take on anything from a single section to a full redesign. Shopify says Canvas won’t replace the existing theme editor yet.
