Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke endorses an idea to weight votes by income tax paid, and says pensioners should lose the right to vote

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke posted on X that retirees on locked-in pensions have become dependents like minors and should lose the right to vote, leaving decisions to those with something at stake. Former TD Bank executive Eric Thor answered two hours later with a tiered scheme awarding no votes to anyone paying no income tax, one vote up to $100,000, and as many as five at $500,000 or above, which Lütke called a good system. The exchange grew out of Lütke's own thread about San Francisco residents fighting a tower project, where he wrote that “Retired, Unemployed, Unemployable, and useful idiots” are the only people who show up to town halls. York University political scientist Dennis Pilon called the argument a classic anti-democratic position. Lütke has neither retracted nor explained the posts, and Shopify has not commented.
