OpenAI’s publicist tries to steer Sam Altman’s Vanity Fair interview away from a ChatGPT user’s suicide, asking to “move on”

OpenAI’s publicist tried to cut short a question in Sam Altman’s Vanity Fair interview after editor Mark Guiducci raised the suicide of a ChatGPT user, saying there were two minutes left and she wanted to “move on.” Guiducci had asked whether Altman knew of Laura Reiley, a journalist whose New York Times essay described her daughter’s ChatGPT chats before the daughter died by suicide. Guiducci finished anyway, asking whether OpenAI would use ChatGPT conversations to shape how it responds to users in a mental health crisis, and Altman said people’s private data from their hardest moments shouldn’t go to researchers without consent. OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told The Verge the interview had run long, and that OpenAI asked to schedule more time after Altman answered.
